After receiver Chad Ochocinco kicked extra points during a preseason game at New England on Thursday, the Cincinnati Bengals found that they were in need of a kicker with Shayne Graham injured. So they signed rookie kicker Sam Swank on Sunday.
Swan was from Wake Forest. While he was at school, he was the school’s leading scorer. He made a school record of kicking 71 career field goals. The Philadelphia Eagles signed him as a free agent but released him on May 27.
The experience made Swan a proper backup for the Bengals kicker Graham, who was recovering from a groin injury, especially after the Thursday’s preseason game in which receiver Ochocinco did the kicker’s job.
