The former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty on Thursday and accepted a plea bargain with a two-year prison sentence.
Burress was previously indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub. It those were convicted, the ex-football would face at least three and a half years of imprisonment. However, after months of bargaining between his lawyer Benjamin Brafman and the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the case went to a grand jury. The final end is that Burress pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
Burress will be sentenced Sept. 22 and expected to serve his sentence immediately after. Besides, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had suspended him and no team is allowed to sign with the former Giants quarterback before he completes his jail term. Goodell also said he would allow Burress to wear back nfl jersey only after he finished the sentence.
